The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank Network (BRAFBN), in association with America’s Second Harvest, was established in 1981 to help feed hungry children, individuals, families, and seniors throughout Virginia. The BRAFBN exists so that “People are Food Secure”. The BRAFBN interprets “Food Secure” as individuals who live below 130% of poverty who receive food from one of our member agencies or food stamps from the Federal Government at least once a month. Now in our twenty-sixth year of operation, the BRAFBN includes over 400 member agencies that service nine cities and 25 counties throughout Central Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley. Our service area encompasses a total population of 1,087,806 with 9.4% of the population (102,721 individuals) living in poverty. In order to address the need for food in our service region, in 2006, the BRAFBN distributed approximately 8,802,510 pounds of food to over 129,000 individuals with an expected increase of between 12% - 18% by end of fiscal year 2007.
Our global ends statement focuses on people versus pounds as it is the responsibility of the BRAFBN to provide those in need with proper nutrition. Therefore, it is in our long range plan that all children, in our service area, from families living in poverty, will receive three nutritious meals per day year-round. It is also a part of our plan to see that all adults living in poverty, in our service area, will receive two nutritious meals per day year round. |
